This privacy policy describes how Sail Dash ("the app") handles your information. Sail Dash is an independently operated iOS app with a companion web dashboard at saildash.app/dashboard. Contact: support@saildash.app.
What information we collect
Account information: If you create an account, we store your email address, sail number, and the timestamp at which you accepted the terms of use. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a unique identifier from that provider plus your email address.
Location data: During an active coaching session, we collect your device's GPS location so the app can display your speed, heading, distance to a coach-set top mark, and record your track for post-session review. Location is also shared live with other devices in the same coaching session that have your session code. Because a session runs for the whole time you are on the water — often with the phone stowed in a pouch or with the screen locked — the app continues to collect location in the background while a session is active, and shows the system's background-location indicator while it does so. Location collection starts only when you start a session and stops when the session ends; we do not collect your location at any other time, and we do not collect it when no session is running.
Session data: Your GPS track, speed, heading, and any coach-set notes associated with a session are stored on our backend (Google Firebase Realtime Database) so that devices within the same session can see each other and so you can review the session afterwards — in the app or by signing in to the web dashboard. Tracks you import into the web dashboard from third-party devices (for example Vakaros or Sailmon exports) are stored the same way, and you can export your own sessions as GPX or CSV files.
Historical wind data: When you open the post-session replay screen, the approximate centre of your session (rounded to about 11 km) and the date range are sent to Open-Meteo, a free weather archive, to retrieve historical wind speed and direction for that area. No account information, sail number, or precise location is sent to Open-Meteo. Open-Meteo states that they do not require any user identification.
What we do not collect
We do not collect analytics, tracking identifiers, or advertising identifiers.
We do not collect contacts, photos, microphone, or any other device-level data not described above.
We do not sell data to third parties. There are no ads in the app.
Who can see your data
You: Your account profile, session history, and tracks are readable only by you when signed in, unless you share a session as described below.
Other users in the same session: Your live position, speed, heading, and sail number are visible to any device that has joined the session with its 7-character session code.
Anyone with a share link: Sessions are private by default. If you (or the session's coach) turn on a public share link for a session, anyone who has that link can view the session — tracks, speeds, and sail numbers — without signing in, until sharing is turned off.
Regatta organisers and participants: If you accept an invitation to share your GPS data with a regatta, your tracks for that event appear in the regatta's race reports and are visible to its organisers and participants.
Us: As the developer, the author has administrative access to the backend for maintenance. We do not review or use session data.
Google / Apple / Firebase: Infrastructure providers that host the backend. They are bound by their own privacy policies.
Brevo: Delivers account emails (address verification, password reset) on our behalf and therefore processes your email address. Brevo is bound by its own privacy policy.
Open-Meteo: Receives only an approximate session centre (rounded to about 11 km) and a date range when you open the replay screen, in order to return historical wind data. Open-Meteo does not receive your account, sail number, or precise track.
How long we keep data
Session data remains in the backend until you delete your account. Account deletion removes your profile and session index. Raw session GPS tracks under a session code may persist as part of shared session data if other sailors participated in the same session.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app at any time: Account screen → Delete Account. This removes your profile, sign-in credentials, and session history index. A re-authentication step is required. There is no separate web form; everything is in-app.
Children
Sail Dash is intended for use by sailors and coaches. If the app is used by a minor, it should be under parental or coach supervision. We do not knowingly collect additional data from children beyond what is described above.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated date at the top of this page will be revised. Material changes will also be announced inside the app.
